I don’t like camping. But I do like New Zealand, and last Christmas when I had a guidebook to update and numerous features to write, I was offered the chance to take a campervan around the North Island.
I was sceptical, but it turned out to be the best way to get around. I had my house on my back and so always had what I needed to hand, whatever the adventure. And there was plenty of adventure.

What’s the value in business class? With ticket prices some four or five times that of economy, is it ever worth upgrading? What do you really get for all that extra money?
I rarely get to find out personally, so instead I asked the airlines themselves and some key travel agents and flight consolidators. Find out what they said in my feature on flying business class for TTG.
I love Tenerife. It has beautiful beaches, great food, plenty of sunshine year-round and brilliant hiking.
That last one comes as a surprise to many but perhaps not for much longer. Tenerife is hosting its first ever walking festival this March, opening up this island of volcanic valleys, lush forests and black sand beaches to anyone keen to explore on two feet.
Read my feature on walking in Tenerife for TTG and get those hiking boots ready.
Big thanks to Robin McKelvie for his photography.
In September I went on my first luxury cruise, with Silversea around the eastern Mediterranean.
